About Age Spot Treatment
Age spots, also known as liver spots or sun spots, are flat brown, gray, or black spots on the skin. They vary in size and usually appear on areas exposed to the sun, such as the face, hands, shoulders, and arms.
Treatment Snapshot
- Visit type
- Age Spot Treatment: laser consultation with skin type, history, and treatment area review
- Sessions
- Usually series-based; number varies by concern and response
- Common planning topics
- Sun exposure, skin tone, downtime, maintenance, and aftercare
Causes
- Sun Exposure: Ultraviolet (UV) light accelerates melanin production. Age spots develop when melanin becomes clumped or produced in high concentrations
- Tanning Beds: Exposure to commercial tanning lamps and beds can also cause age spots
- Aging: As you age, the production of melanin becomes less regulated, leading to age spots
How It Works
- 1Topical Creams: Products containing hydroquinone, glycolic acid, or retinoids can help fade spots over time
- 2Cryotherapy: Freezing age spots with liquid nitrogen
- 3Microdermabrasion: A procedure that sands off the top layers of skin
- 4Laser Therapy: The xeo® laser gently breaks down melanin and helps rejuvenate skin without invasive procedures

A consultation reviews medical history, medications, allergies, pregnancy or breastfeeding status, prior procedures, skin type, healing history, and the timing of events or travel before a treatment plan is recommended.
Laser Pre-Care and Post-Care

Frequently Asked Questions
Do age spots come back after treatment?
Treated spots may fade, but pigment can recur and new spots can form with sun exposure. Daily SPF and follow-up guidance are important.
How many sessions to fade my spots?
Some spots fade after 1-2 treatments. Darker, older, or deeper pigment may need additional sessions, and complete clearance is not guaranteed.
Does the laser treatment hurt?
You might feel a quick snap, like a rubber band. Numbing options can be discussed if sensitivity is a concern.
Is it appropriate for my skin type?
Cutera xeo® laser settings can be adjusted for a range of skin tones, but suitability and pigment risk should be assessed during consultation.
